The Savate Open Training & Grading Day, held in Oxford on Saturday went off very well. We congratulate Oxford Club Instructor Laura Gilbert for her hard work in making the day a success. Laura actually started her Savate training with us here in Cambridge, so it is especially pleasing to see a new branch of the GB Savate tree growing and beginning to flourish.

The new venue on Monday and Tuesday night, St. Bede's Sports Complex in Birdwood Road is very nice. Those who made it along last Monday had the benefit of 'playing' the middle length staff with Ollie.

On Tuesday night's second session we enjoyed the benefit of having some Judo mats to train on again, which meant that we were able to work on our ground-fighting skills.

This Sunday's Savate session (11th March) was the last at Parkside for thisterm. Next Sunday (18th) is Mother's Day, and we've decided to have that night off. In other words, there'll be no training on Sunday 18th March. On Sunday 25th, we have the Savate 2007 League kicking off (quite literally) in Coleridge Gymnasium, Radegund Road, Cambridge. This will be an all day event, so there will again be no training that evening.

We will restart the Sunday evening Savate training sessions on 1st April at the Leys School Sports complex, on Trumpington Road.

CAMA instructors Julie Gabriel and Morgan Alexander are on their way back from France today having spent three days of intensive training in Savate and Canne de Combat. The Savate sessions were with Gilles le Duigou, and Yonnel Kurtz took them for some heavy sessions in Canne de Combat I hear.

Those of you who are interested in Canne de Combat should try to make it along to tonight's training session, as I'm sure it will include some of the training drills and exercises they did over the weekend.

This weeks training schedule:

MON 12
6.30 - 8.00pm St. Bede's School Sports Complex, Birdwood Road
European/Western Stick/Cane & Staff fighting arts
Canne de Combat training with instructors Julie Gabriel & Morgan Alexander

TUE 13
7.00 - 9.30pm St. Bede's School Sports Complex, Birdwood Road
7.00 - 8.15pm Filipino Martial Arts - CAMA Generic JKD/Kali
8.15 - 9.30pm CAMA JKD/Multicombat - Close-Quarter training
As this session sometimes includes groundwork, please bring a long-sleeved top (Judo/Karate/Sombo/Rugby, or an old sweatshirt).

WED 14
7.00 - 9.30pm Coleridge Community College Gymnasium
7.00 - 8.15pm Savate Kickboxing training
8.30 - 9.30pm Savate free sparring (also: pre-sparring)
We remind you that the GBSF 2007 League is now less than 2 weeks away, so it's especially important to get some sparring practise in now, especially if you intend to compete.

THU 15
7.00 - 9.30pm Netherhall Upper School, Queen Edith's Way
7.00 - 8.15pm Guba Doce Pares Eskrima
8.15 - 9.30pm Focus Mitts & Pads workout session
This session is one of the most important sessions we offer you. It provides a great physical work-out, and also will help you to improve your striking skills & combinations - whatever your art.

SUN 18 Mothering Sunday - No training tonight.

Best wishes to all,

Pugil

Apologies for being a week late posting this:

The Great Britain Savate Federation Savate Assaut 2007 League event (1 of 3) got off to a flying start on Sunday, 25th March. There were more than thirty fights, and we also had competitors over from Belgium and France.

Well done to everyone who took part. A special thanks to those members who came along to Coleridge Gymnasium on Saturday to help put the ring up, and to those who hung on after the competition was over on Sunday to help with dismantling it and putting it away again.

James Southwood, from London, invited a photographer along on the day, and he was able to get some nice shots. If you're interested in having a look, click on this link: http://www.asifikram.com/savate

Most of you will have noticed that there has been a lot of news reports recently about knife attacks - including some fatal stabbings.

Whilst the best form of self-defence is not to be in the situation in the first place, the next best defence is to escape from any potentially dangerous situation as quickly and safely as possible. This is especially important if you come up against a knife-wielding attacker. Although, how do you know if an attacker is carrying a knife anyway? He won't always show it to you, and the first you'll know about it is when it's too late.

For that very reason, you should always endeavour to keep your distance. If there is no obvious and easy escape try to get something between you and the blade. Be on the look-out for an 'equaliser'. By which I mean an object to use in defence against the blade. A chair, broom, walking stick, etc. Even loose change (coins) can be thrown into the face of your opponent as a distraction, before making your escape. Kick to the knee, before making off, if you feel there is the opportunity, and without putting yourself even more at risk. But only try to disarm your attacker with the empty-hands as an absolute last resort.

Supposing the attack is sudden, and there's no easy escape. No equaliser to hand, and no time or other option available to do anything other than to defend yourself with your bare hands... Well this is where training with Danny Guba might just save your life. Danny has been in, and survived, real life knife confrontations. In fact, he even survived a gun attack at close range too. His training and reactions have saved his life on more than one occasion... and the information he'll be sharing with us on Saturday 7th April (this coming Saturday) may just one day save yours too.

Seminar Deatails:

Date: Saturday 7th April. Times: 11am 'til 4pm.

Venue: St. Bede's School Sports Complex, Birdwood Road, Cambridge.

Costs: £35 CAMA Licensed Members (in advance) Others: £40 (in advance)
(A £5 surcharge will be levied on-the-door to those who have not pre-paid)

As this is an Open Seminar, please inform any other martial artists and your friends about this very important training day.

We will give £5 discount to CAMA Annual Licensed Members who signs up any non-members to attend this event. That's five-pounds discount for every one non-member who you introduce and/or bring along with you.

If you are able to get four non-members to attend the seminar, you can come along and participate in the seminar free of charge.

SEMINARS:

On Saturday 7th April, we had another (mainly knife defence) seminar here in Cambridge with Grandmaster Danny Guba, 10th Degree Black Belt.

With another two fatal knife attacks taking place in London, in the last few days, our decision to ask GM Danny to concentrate on knife was a good one.

For those of you who missed the seminar, I'm pleased to say that GM Danny will be here again on Sunday 3rd June with Master Percival 'Val' Pableo, who is coming over from the Philippines.

Some of us went down to Kent last year to train with Val, and I can tell you that he is really good, and well-worth seeing and training with.

CANNE DE COMBAT and GUBA DOCE PARES ESKRIMA training:

There will be no Canne de Combat training tonight (Monday 9th) or next week (Monday 16th April). The next session will take place on Monday 23rd April.

From Monday 16th April we will also be offering regular Doce Pares Eskrima sessions on Monday evenings, from 6.30 - 8pm. These will take place in the Sports Centre at St. Bede's School Sports Complex, and will run alongside the Canne de Combat class - albeit in completely separate training areas.

Instructor Tim Moore will take the Doce Pares Eskrima session on one side of the netting, whilst the Canne de Combat session will be taken by Instructors Morgan Alexander and Julie Gabriel on the other side.

PRIVATE TUITION:

I remind you all that I am available during weekdays for private tuition. This can be one-to-one, or you can share a session with a friend. I usually conduct these sessions at the Leys Sports Complex, Trumpington Road.

The fees are: CAMA member = £25 per hour (or two members may share for £30).
Non-members prices are: £30 per hour (or two non-members can share for £40).
A member and a non-member can also share sessions for £35 per hour.

In addition to the above, I can offer half-hour or one-hour personal tuition at St. Bede's School Sports Complex on Thursday evenings between 7 - 8.15pm.
Private training sessions can concentrate on any area of training required.
The fees are: CAMA member = £20 per hour (or £12 for half an hour).

TRAINING RING:

Many thanks to those who turned out last night to assist us in putting the Training Ring away in its new location at Coleridge School. It would have taken Julie and I much longer on our own.

CANNE DE COMBAT and GUBA DOCE PARES ESKRIMA training:

Please be reminded that there will be no Canne de Combat training tonight (Monday 16th). Classes will recommence next week, Monday 23rd April.

There will, however, be a Doce Pares Eskrima training session tonight, with instructor Tim MOORE, 6.30 - 8pm, in the Sports Centre at St. Bede's School Sports Complex, Birdwood Road. Please do go along and support him and us in this brand new session.

BASSINGBOURN BARRACKS:

One or two members have expressed and interest and asked what the Monday night sessions are all about over at Bassingbourn Barracks. Basically, I've been going over there for a number of years now to take Martial Art and/or Kickboxing training sessions with new young recruits. If you are a senior member (3 years or more regular training at CAMA), and would like to come over with me sometime (one-off or more regular), then please let me know.

PRIVATE TUITION:

Someone (male) has contacted me to ask if anyone would like to share one or two regular private sessions each week on Panantukan and Street Defence. If you are interested in sharing a session with him, either as a one-off or on a more regular basis, please contact me.

SUNDAY NIGHT SAVATE KICKBOXING SESSIONS:

The number of people turning up on Sunday evenings for the last two weeks has been quite low, so we have decided not to have a session this coming Sunday, 22nd April. Please note, however, that we are due to start back at Parkside School Gym on Sundays at the start of the new University Term. We will, therefore, restart there on Sunday 29th April - Speaking of which...

UPCOMING SAVATE KICKBOXING TRAINING DAY:

Please make a note in your diary (or on your calendar) that we (CAMA) will be hosting a GBSF Savate Open Training & Grading Day on Sunday 29th April. This is likely to take place in the Gym at Coleridge, from around 11am in the morning, but I'll confirm the venue and times in next week's news.

SAVATE KICKBOXING TRAINING & GRADING DAY:

I would like to thank all those members who supported us yesterday, Sunday, 29th April, by attending the GBSF Savate Open Training & Grading Day, held in the Gymnasium at Coleridge Community College, Cambridge.

The day featured: Savate Boxe (kickboxing), Savate Defence (street Savate), and Canne De Combat (sport cane fighting).

Several GBSF members undertook coloured glove grading tests in Savate Boxe. The standard was very high overall, as the following results show:

NAME Glove Colour Score Remarks

Sian CLARK (C) Green (2nd level) 99% Pass with distinction
David BARKER (C) Green (2nd level) 96% Pass with distinction
Richard CASTLE (C) Green (2nd level) 94% Pass with distinction
James WADDELL (CU) Green (2nd level) 91% Pass with distinction
Paul CLARK (C) Green (2nd level) 87% Pass with credit

Lizzy HAWKINS (L) Red (3rd level) 94% Pass with distinction
Tom HANDLEY (L) Red (3rd level) 87% Pass with credit

Darren FREWER (C) White (4th level) 90% Pass with distinction
Dom TSUI (L) White (4th level) 89% Pass with credit
Paul KING (M) White (4th level) 88% Pass with credit
Steve WRIGHT (L) White (4th level) 84% Pass with credit

C = Cambridge CU = Cambridge University L = London M = Margate

In addition to the above, Paul KING from Margate, was awarded 'Initiateur' (first level instructorship) under the GBSF.

The following two people were also nominated for consideration to receive their Initiateur qualification the near future:

Alain JEAN-BAPTISTE (Birmingham) and Chris HILL (Cambridge).

ADVERTISING AND PROMOTING THE ACADEMY:

I remain convinced that the best form of advertising is 'word-of-mouth'. With that being the case, please do remember to mention our classes to your friends and any others who you think might be interested in the benefits of training with us.

I have just produced a new flier with a new logo - although it's not meant to replace the old one completely. If you work somewhere where there is a noticeboard, or you know of somewhere where we might be able to display one or two of them, please do let us know ASAP.

UNIFORM & TRAINING APPAREL:

When anyone first joins the Academy they will receive a complimentary group T-Shirt. The idea is that this should be worn during our training sessions. Therefore, please endeavour to wear yours whenever possible.

MEMBERSHIP & TRAINING FEES:

I am considering the idea of offering the choice of a combined membership and training fee monthly payment option. This would eliminate the need to purchase annual licensed membership individually. Basically, it would mean that anyone who wanted to pay for their training with us by Bank Standing Order each month (either the 16-session or unlimited options) would simply pay a little bit more each month, and then not have to fork out a lump sum each year when their membership became due for renewal. Please let me know if you might be interested in this option.

PRIVATE TUITION:

Private tuition is ideal for anyone who cannot make it along to our regular training sessions in the evenings, due to shift-work or family commitments, etc. They are also great for anyone who wants to fast-track their learning process, or for those who quite simply prefer to receive more individual attention, and go at their own pace.

Don't forget that, during the month of May I am offering a special discount for anyone who books two or more private daytime sessions in the Month.

Anyone who books two one-hour sessions pays only £40 for the two sessions, instead of £50. There is an even better offer for anyone who books three sessions as that will cost just £50 for the three.

I'm also offering discounts for any two members sharing. Usually you'd pay £30 per hour (£15 each), but if you book two sessions the cost is only £50 for the two (£25 per hour, or £12.50 per hour each). I'm also offering the same 'three for the cost of two' deal for members sharing. In other words, pay £60 (£30 each) for three one-hour shared private sessions.

GUBA DOCE PARES ESKRIMA training:

Don't forget that Instructor Tim MOORE is now conducting Doce Pares Eskrima training sessions on Monday evenings, in St. Bede's School Sports Complex, Birdwood Road, from 6.30 - 8.00pm. If you are at all interested in Filipino Martial Arts, please do go along and support him.

CANNE DE COMBAT training:

Please also remember that we offer Canne de Combat session on Monday evenings in St. Bede's from 6.30 - 8.00pm with Instructors Morgan ALEXANDER and Julie GABRIEL.

This session is running again tonight. Anyone interested in coming along to assist please give me a call: 07709 81 44 22

**VENUE CHANGE THIS THURSDAY**

Please make note that this Thursday's sessions will take place in Netherhall LOWER SCHOOL, GUNHILD WAY (not the Upper school). No change of times though.

The SAVATE SEMINAR with Gilles le Duigou

This event was a great success again. On this latest occasion, Gilles brought Philippe AGUESSE with him, a Professor of Canne de Combat, along with him. Whilst not everyone is 'into' the Canne training, it did mean that everyone gained an insight and some exposure of this Savate associated discipline.

The first day had a higher attendance than the second day, although those who attended on Sunday also experienced some really excellent Savate Combat preparation training.

SAVATE INSTRUCTOR - new appointments

On Saturday the GBSF Executive Committee also met, and among the things up for discussion was Savate Initiateur Instructor considerations. Five names were put forward, and three of those were approved immediately.

Congratulations to the following on their success:

Chris HILL (Cambridge Academy)
Darren FREWER (Cambridge Academy)
Tony GOLDFINKLE (Middlesborough)

Please tell anyone, who you think might be interested, to contact us.

Apologies for not being able to get this out to you all before, I was in France over the weekend and didn't get back until yesterday evening. I was there mainly to attend a meeting of the International Savate Federation (FIS) Executive Committee. But I also saw some of the final elimination's for the World Savate Championships in Combat (full-contact fighting) on Sunday.

I didn't arrive until midnight on Saturday, so I missed all the first day bouts. There were 250 fighters over the weekend apparently, with three rings constantly on the go. On the Sunday, I witnessed some spectacular fights, including quite a few knock-downs, several stoppages, one or two knock-outs, and a few towels thrown in... just in time!

SUNDAY NIGHT SAVATE...

...sessions are up and running again, as of last week, in the new Sports Centre at the back of St. Bede's School School, Birdwood Road, CB1 3TD

This really is a superb venue, so do try to make it along sometimes, if only occasionally.

ACADEMY SAVATE - Adult Kickboxing Beginners course

This four-week course started last Wednesday, 6th June, in the Gymnasium at Coleridge. There are still three sessions left, and spaces are available. Please let your friends know about it (and about all our classes). We'll do a pro-rata fee for anyone who wants to do the remaining three sessions.

SAVATE TIGER CUBS - Kickboxing for Youngsters

This four-week course started last Thursday, 7th June, in Netherhall Lower School. There are still three sessions left, and plenty of spaces available. Please let anyone know about it as we're currently trying to get a junior section going. We'll do a pro-rata fee for anyone who wants to do the remaining three sessions.

NEW T-SHIRT DESIGNS

The new limited-edition Academy T-Shirts are becoming even more limited as I type this. If you want the new 'KALI - The Warrior Art' shirt, or the 'Guba Doce Pares Multi-Style System' shirt, you'll need to be quick. We only have Medium and Large left in both designs.

ZUBO (TM)

There has been some interest shown in the new Zubo, even from people outside of our group. Steve Wright from London bought two - as soon as he saw them. He has just sent me an email saying that some of his students want one too. Even one guy in Germany had one off me at the weekend. I've still got a few left for sale to members at £7.50 (r.r.p. £9.50). As soon as they're mostly gone, I'll be getting some more made up again.

PRIVATE TUITION

I am still available for day-time private sessions, and I may now have found another alternative training venue on the South side of the City too. Please contact me if you'd like to arrange a session (or two).

THURSDAY EVENINGS THROUGHOUT JUNE (please note)...

...will all be held in Netherhall LOWER School, Gunhild Way (NOT the Upper).

Don't forget that if you attend the first session on any night when there are two sessions, you may stay on and participate in the second session for half the usual price (when paying by cash or by blue card).

In addition, if you're thinking of attending two sessions on the same night, and attending more than once a week on a regular basis, you really can save yourself a fair bit of money by going over to paying monthly.

ACADEMY WEBSITE

Please remember to checkout the Academy website from time to time. You can find it at the following url: http://www.cama.org.uk/

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SECOND SESSION

We have decide to make some slight changes to the second session on Wednesday, 8.30 - 9.30pm. The session will now be a 'Savate (kickboxing) Progression' session, which means that as well as free-sparing the session will also cater for members to prepare for sparring, competition and grading tests. We hope that within a week or two there will also be an opportunity to practise on the pads and, possibly, to also work out on the heavy bag, which we hope to get put up again shortly.

SOCIAL EVENTS

If we get some good weather in the coming weeks we'll be looking to organise a few outdoor Social events, such as: a trip to the coast; a meal out (down by the river perhaps); and a barbecue. We could also arrange a trip to the cinema or theatre, for example. Please let us know if any of the suggested ideas are of interest to you, and also tell us of any other ideas that you may have in addition to those listed above.

Knife Drills & Focus Mitts tonight - Thurs 21st
Permalink Closed

A reminder to you all that the training sessions tonight will take place in the Gymnasium at Netherhall LOWER School, Gunhild Way (not Queen Edith's Way - as on last post), Cambridge.

You can get to Gunhild Way directly from Wulfstan Way, which runs between Cherry Hinton Road and Queen Edith's Way.

I have a Junior Savate Tiger Cubs session from 6.30 - 7.30pm but Julie will also be there to start the Kali/Eskrima class at 7.00pm.

At 7.30pm I will take over from Julie and will concentrate on Knife drills, including practising disarms.

At 8.15pm we will be practising our Boxing and Kickboxing combinations, for a great workout on the Focus Mitts. This session will end at 9.30pm.

Week 30 News - Monday 23rd July 2007

REVISED TRAINING SCHEDULE

We were very pleased that the newly revised Summer Training Programme (which came fully into effect last week) was well-received by pretty much everyone.

OUR COSTS ARE UP - YOURS HAVE CHANGED VERY LITTLE

Despite Netherhall and Coleridge having put up their hire charges recently, and the fact that our group insurance costs are now around £1,000 a year, we have tried extremely hard not to pass on those price increases to you - our members. I am confident that many of you will have already worked out that the per-hour training costs - for most of you - has hardly changed at all.

SAVINGS TO BE HAD IN ANY CASE

If you train twice-a-week, for 50 weeks a year, and you currently pay by Blue Card, you could save yourself £68* a year on the training fees alone by going over to paying by Bank Standing Order. And don't forget, if you pay by Bank Standing Order throughout the year we won't take an annual membership renewal fee (currently £36*) from you in subsequent years either - that's a combined total saving of £104* a year, based on attending just twice a week.

Anyone who trains three times each week could save themselves over £350* a year, if they take into account the membership renewal fee as well.

Those people who like to train as often as they can are allowed to attend up to four nights each week if they pay monthly by Bank Standing Order - saving themselves (potentially) over £600* each year. WHO ELSE GIVES YOU THAT?

*Figures based on Adult Members. Amounts differ for full-time Students and youngsters aged under 16yrs.

DAY TRIP TO THE COAST & FREE TRAINING SESSIONS ON THE BEACH - rescheduled

Due to a 'pour' (mis-spelling intended) weather forecast for this weekend we decided to reschedule our annual day-trip to the North Norfolk Coast for Sun 19th August. (Yes, I know, it did turn out to be fairly sunny after all, but it wasn't that warm a day!)

DOCE PARES ESKRIMA (Guba style)

Just to clarify that we ARE still teaching and promoting Doce Pares Eskrima within our training programme. At present it is being fully incorporated in with the Tuesday and Thursday night sessions. I am also teaching the art on a personal tuition basis (small group & private individuals) at other times.

Grandmaster DANNY GUBA is also scheduled to be back in Cambridge on Sunday 5th August. I will announce the venue, times and cost, in next weeks news.

PERSONAL/PRIVATE TUITION

Just to remind you that I am regularly available for Private tuition. If you have a relative, friend, or work colleague with a birthday coming up maybe, who you'd like to treat to something a bit different, speak to me about the kind of things I/we can offer. We can also do kiddies birthday parties too.

PARKSIDE FEDERATION - COLERIDGE CAMPUS - SMOKE FREE POLICY

We recently received a letter from the Parkside Federation regarding their Smoke Free Policy relating to Coleridge Campus, Radegund Road.

Part of the letter says:

"Smoking is not permitted in any part of the premises, entrances or grounds at any time, by any person regardless of their status or business with the school"

We urge all members who smoke to please adhere strictly to the above ruling. You might even use this as yet another excuse to cut down further, or maybe even stop altogether - smoking and physical activity don't really mix well!

DAN INOSANTO's BIRTHDAY

The legendary martial artist and former friend and training partner of the late Bruce Lee will be 71 years old this Tuesday, 24th July. For those of you who have never met him I can tell you that, in addition to his lifetime of dedication to the martial/fighting arts of the world, he is a very fine human being - something far more important than martial arts and suchlike.

Please don't forget to arrive a few minutes before the start times listed so that we can begin sessions on time, SO THAT YOU DON'T LOSE OUT!
